About Reserva Natural de Sierra de la Tesla

Located in the State of Mexico, Reserva Natural de Sierra de la Tesla encompasses a complex of mountainous terrain characterized by steep ridges, deep valleys, and a mosaic of pine-oak forests that support a diverse array of flora and fauna. The reserve is part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt and features elevations ranging from roughly 2,300 to 3,200 meters above sea level, which creates microclimates that sustain unique ecological communities. Rich in native plant species such as oaks, pines, and endemic wildflowers, the reserve serves as a vital habitat for wildlife including white-tailed deer, coyotes, opossums, and a variety of bird species like the Mexican jay and golden eagle. Historically, this region has been home to indigenous peoples and small agricultural settlements, and today remains relatively undeveloped, providing a tranquil wilderness experience. Recreational opportunities within the reserve include hiking through scenic trails that traverse the Sierra’s ridges and forests, birdwatching, mountain biking, and nature photography. Notable natural landmarks include picturesque viewpoints over the valleys below and the clear mountain streams that provide fresh water and a habitat for aquatic species. The reserve’s limited infrastructure and low visitor numbers make it an appealing destination for those seeking solitude and immersion in nature in the heart of Mexico’s highlands. Its proximity to Mexico City allows for accessible weekend excursions, offering an important conservation refuge and educational site for biodiversity and sustainable management.
